CPR Summer School 2020
Advanced Methods for the Analysis of Protein Disease Mechanisms
Designed to appeal to both clinical and basic scientists, this course brings together a group of experienced researchers and teachers to provide a comprehensive, theoretical and practical training in the application of state-of-the-art techniques in cellular and molecular biology characterizing protein mechanisms of action in living cells.

The reason why the study of proteins is so important is that proteins are the main effectors of cellular function. Their myriad functions include safeguarding the stability of our genome, being the structural and enzymatic components of the cell, and serving as cell-surface receptors and growth factors that mediate cell and tissue communication.
Detailed mechanistic studies of how genetic alterations affect protein function, how proteins interact within signaling pathways to affect cell behavior, and how post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitylation serve to regulate disease signaling pathways will contribute to the progress of translational research within medicine and provide important insights may be used in developing new treatment modalities.

Powerful high-throughput technologies for DNA/RNA sequencing, mass spectrometry-based proteomics, genome-editing techniques and protein imaging now enable unprecedented understanding of the molecular basis of human disease. The course will give an insight into the techniques used at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR) to further our understanding of protein function in health and disease.
The course is comprised of two modules: an e-learning module with online lectures, theoretical exercises and literature reviews, and a classroom learning module lasting two weeks. The latter mainly consists of student-led seminars, lab exercises and demonstrations.

Credit points: 5 ECTS
You can participate, if you have completed a bachelor's degree within:
- pharmaceutical sciences
- natural sciences
You must be able to read and write English at a scientific level.
The course is comprised of two modules: an e-learning module with online lectures, theoretical exercises and literature reviews and a classroom learning module lasting two weeks mainly with student-led seminars, lab exercises and demonstrations.
This course will provide you with excellent training in several general areas of protein research including:
- mass spectrometry based methods for quantitative analysis of proteins and post-translational modifications
- light microscopy-based analysis of protein signaling and protein-protein interactions
- gene editing
- and the use of immunological and genetic methods for analyzing chromatin-associated proteins
Lecturers: A variety of international and national professors teach this course. You will get a feeling of a true international classroom.
You are exempted from payment, if:
You are enrolled at a Danish university and the course is part of your master's programme. Danish students must provide a pre-approval of credit transfer from their home institution upon application.
You are a student at UCPH enrolled in one of the following programmes, you do not need to apply for pre-approval of credit transfer:
- MSc in Human Biology
You are an exchange student and attend the course as part of the autumn exchange semester (min. 3 months stay).
You are an exchange student nominated through Nordplus express or Nordlys.
All other participants (students, working professionals, etc.) must pay tuition fee according to the information below.

|Non-EU/EEA citizens||9,000 DKK|
The fee covers participation in the course. It does not cover course materials, travel, accommodation and living expenses during the course.
Full payment of course fees must be transferred in May. Payment details will be forwarded upon acceptance.
You can only get a refund of your tuition fee, if you cancel at least two month prior to the beginning of the course including e-learning modules.
You can apply for the Novo Nordisk International Talent Programme (NNITP) scholarship, if you are incoming students from IARU universities, Harvard University, or University of Sydney.
- Application deadline is 1 April 2019.
