About the Novo Nordisk Foundation
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded health research with 735 mio. DKK in 2007.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation is a self-governing and profit-making foundation. The objective of the Novo Nordisk Foundation is twofold:
-
to provide a stable basis for the commercial and research activities conducted by the companies within the Novo Group;
-
to support scientific, humanitarian and social purposes.
Most of the grants are awarded to medical and scientific projects and to selected other research areas.
The donation to a protein center at the University of Copenhagen is due to a wish to support the development of an important research area in which Denmark is in a strong position beforehand.
The funds for the grants stem from current income from securities, especially returns on the Novo Nordisk Foundation's portfolio of A and B shares in Novo Nordisk A/S. On 31 December 1999, this share portfolio was transferred to Novo A/S, a holding company wholly owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation approves the allocation of profits within Novo A/S, and is thus able to award significant amounts for research and humanitarian purposes in the future.
